Business and industry
Industry and commerce is largely limited to the south of the county, with most of the land being given over to farming. Harlow is a centre for electronics, science and pharmaceutical companies. Chelmsford has been a significant location for electronics companies since the industry was born and it is also the location for several insurance and economic services organisations. Basildon is the location of New Holland Agriculture's European HQ and Brentwood houses the Ford Motor Company's British HQ.
Other businesses in Essex are dominated by mechanical engineering such as metalworking, glassmaking and plastics and the service sector. Colchester is a garrison town, and the local economy is aided by the Army's personnel living there. Within Basildon is the State Street Corporation's United Kingdom HQ International Financial Data Services. The town remains heavily dependent on London for employment due to its proximity and direct transport routes.
Southend
Southend-on-Sea is home to the Adventure Island theme park. It is one of the few still-growing British seaside resorts. It benefits from direct modern rail links from Fenchurch Street railway station and Liverpool Street station (this places housing in high demand, particularly for financial services commuters). This thereby maintains the town's commercial and general economy.
